Shah Rukh Khan is not the world's richest actor, and Hurun now values him below its 2025 figure

The Hurun India Rich List valued Khan at Rs 12,490 crore (about US$1.4 billion) in October 2025, making him the first Indian actor in its billionaire category. Hurun's global list in March 2026 put him at US$1.3 billion, and Forbes ranks Taylor Swift at US$2 billion.

Shah Rukh Khan became India's first actor billionaire in October 2025. He was not, then or now, the world's richest actor, and the figure that made the headline has since fallen.

The M3M Hurun India Rich List 2025, published on 1 October 2025, valued Khan at Rs 12,490 crore. Business Today and India TV both reported the number, and Malay Mail put the dollar equivalent at about US$1.4 billion. It was his first appearance in Hurun's billionaire category and it made him the highest placed entertainer on an India list, ahead of Juhi Chawla and family at Rs 7,790 crore.

That is what Hurun measured: Indian wealth, ranked against Indians. The claim that Khan had passed Tom Cruise and Taylor Swift to become the richest actor in the world was an extrapolation, made loudest by The Hollywood Reporter India, whose October 2025 headline declared him richer than Taylor Swift, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jerry Seinfeld. Hurun's India list does not support that comparison. Nor does the global data.

Forbes published its 2026 ranking of celebrity billionaires on 10 March 2026: 22 people worth a combined US$48.1 billion. Taylor Swift appears seventh at US$2 billion. Tyler Perry is at US$1.4 billion, Arnold Schwarzenegger at US$1.2 billion and Jerry Seinfeld at US$1.1 billion. Shah Rukh Khan is not on the list. Neither are Tom Cruise or Dwayne Johnson.

Hurun's own global list, released on 5 March 2026 and calculated on assets as at 15 January 2026, does include Khan, at US$1.3 billion, or about Rs 10,800 crore, as LatestLY and DNA reported. That is lower than the Rs 12,490 crore Hurun itself had published five months earlier. On the same list Hurun values Taylor Swift at US$1.6 billion, Jay-Z at US$2.8 billion and Rihanna at US$1.5 billion.

Two compilers, five days apart, put Swift at US$1.6 billion and US$2 billion respectively. That gap is the point. Celebrity net worth estimates are constructed from asset valuations, assumed multiples on private companies and guesses at liabilities, and they can differ by hundreds of millions between firms both acting in good faith. A ranking built on them is not a fact about the world. It is one company's model, published for attention.

What is verifiable is the shape of Khan's business. Hurun and the outlets reporting it attribute his valuation to Red Chillies Entertainment, his production company, and to his majority stake in Knight Riders Sports, which owns the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. Those are the two assets that turn an acting career into a balance sheet, and they are why his valuation moves with cricket franchise economics and a film slate rather than with fees.

The wider point the original story reached for does hold. An Indian actor now appears on a global wealth list at all, which was not true a decade ago, and the route was ownership rather than salary. That is a real change in how Indian film capital works, and it does not need the world's richest framing to be interesting.

Khan's other recent milestone was not financial. On 1 August 2025 he won the National Film Award for Best Actor for Jawan, shared with Vikrant Massey for 12th Fail, his first in a career of more than three decades, as All India Radio's news service and Gulf News reported.

His next release is King, directed by Siddharth Anand and scheduled for 24 December 2026, with Deepika Padukone and his daughter Suhana Khan.

What happens next to the number is unglamorous. Hurun's India list for 2026 is due later this year and will restate Khan's valuation on whatever assumptions the firm is then using. If Knight Riders Sports is revalued, or King performs, the figure moves again. Readers should treat whatever it says the way the 2025 edition should have been treated: as an estimate produced by a company that sells research, not as a scoreboard.
